Technical Issue
The landmark Sydney Opera House has been an icon of Sydney since 1973. In the early to mid-2000s upgrades to the Playhouse, Drama and Studio theatre were performed to improve the fire and life safety in the building.
Being an extremely complex existing building there were many challenges in managing smoke spread in the event of fire. Traditional mechanical smoke management systems alone were not the solution.
Greene Fire Solution
Greene Fire’s SmokeStop™ smoke curtains were used in conjunction with improved detection and mechanical air handling systems to manage the smoke in these theatres in a fire event. Greene Fire’s SmokeStop™ smoke curtains were installed in the Studio theatre in January 2007 and the Playhouse theatre in August 2007.
Being a highly regulated and proactive management team, the Sydney Opera House requested and was provided with comprehensive operational training on the smoke curtains which were then regularly tested on a weekly basis. Greene Fire received only one maintenance call out on these curtains from installation up until gaining the maintenance agreement for all smoke curtains at the Sydney Opera House in January 2013.
Greene Fire are the only company approved for the installation, commissioning and servicing of active and fixed flexible barriers for fire and smoke control under the UKAS accredited IFCC scheme SD105.
In December 2010 Sydney Opera House replaced previous installations (not by Greene Fire) in the Drama theatre which were only 4 years old, due to breakdown and maintenance issues.
