Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about Greene Fire’s fire curtain solutions.
What is a fire curtain and how does it work?+
A fire curtain is an automatic fire-resistant barrier that remains concealed until activated by a fire alarm. It deploys to form a barrier that helps limit the spread of fire between building areas.
What FRL ratings can Greene Fire fire curtains achieve?+
Ratings depend on the tested system and configuration. FireMaster is specified up to –/240/–, while the supplied FireMaster Plus specification lists up to –/120/–. Refer to individual product documentation for project-specific performance.
What fire curtain products does Greene Fire supply?+
Greene Fire offers FireMaster, FireMaster Plus, FireMaster Concertina, FireMaster Plus Concertina, FireMaster Insul8 and FireMaster Egress, alongside other project-specific solutions. FireMaster FZ is a bushfire shutter; A1 is a fabric designation, not a standalone curtain model. Confirm the complete current range before publication.
Where are fire curtains typically installed?+
Fire curtains may be specified for atriums, stairwells, lift openings, lobbies and other openings requiring fire separation. Suitability depends on the building design and fire engineering requirements.
Are fire curtains suitable for open-plan designs?+
Yes. Concealed fire curtains can help maintain open architectural layouts while providing a deployable fire barrier where a suitable fire-engineered solution has been established.
What is the difference between FireMaster and FireMaster Plus?+
FireMaster achieves an FRL of up to –/240/– in the supplied specification. FireMaster Plus achieves up to –/120/– and uses a specialist intumescent fabric with documented radiant heat performance of 10 kW/m² at 365 mm for at least 90 minutes. FireMaster Plus can use a single roller assembly across widths up to 30 metres.
Can fire curtains replace fire-rated walls or doors?+
In certain applications, a fire curtain may be specified as an alternative fire barrier. Its suitability must be demonstrated for the particular opening and supported by the applicable fire engineering and approval requirements.
How fast do fire curtains deploy?+
The supplied FireMaster and FireMaster Plus specifications state a controlled operating speed of 0.06–0.15 m/s, including gravity fail-safe operation. Other systems should be checked against their own technical documentation.
Do fire curtains have smoke control capability?+
Selected fire curtain systems have documented smoke leakage performance. The supplied FireMaster and FireMaster Plus specifications reference EN 1634-3 smoke leakage testing. Confirm any AS 1530.7 claim against the relevant product’s test evidence.
What safety features are available with Greene Fire fire curtains?+
Gravity fail-safe motors are a standard feature of FireMaster and FireMaster Plus. Depending on the system and project, additional options can include visual or voice warnings, emergency retract, split-drop or dual-drop functions, obstruction warning systems and BMS monitoring. Egress provisions may be available on compatible products. Both supplied specifications also describe battery backup within their control arrangements.
Can fire curtains be customised in shape?+
Different systems support different opening configurations, including straight-drop and concertina arrangements. The available geometry and dimensions depend on the selected product and its tested configuration.
Are Greene Fire fire curtains tested to Australian Standards?+
The supplied FireMaster and FireMaster Plus specifications reference fire-resistance testing to AS 1530.4 and smoke leakage testing to EN 1634-3. FireMaster FZ is a separate bushfire shutter product; its BAL–FZ and AS 1530.8.2 claims should be checked against its own current documentation.
What headbox sizes are available?+
Headbox dimensions vary by product, span and drop height. FireMaster and FireMaster Plus offer multiple headbox configurations, with dimensions detailed in their respective product specifications.
Can fire curtains be integrated with BMS or EWIS?+
FireMaster and FireMaster Plus support optional BMS status outputs, including alarm, power, battery, curtain position and fault signals. Fire alarm interfaces are specified; any EWIS integration should be confirmed for the project’s control arrangement.
How long do fire curtains last?+
Service life depends on installation, operating conditions and maintenance. The supplied specifications require regular inspection and maintenance and reference six-monthly servicing; they do not establish a guaranteed 10–15-year lifespan.
