Bushfire Fire Rated Window

Greene Fire’s Aluflam BAL-FZ Fire Rated Window provides a specialised glazing solution for buildings located in designated bushfire-prone areas. Designed for applications requiring Bushfire Attack Level – Flame Zone (BAL-FZ) protection, the system combines fire-resistant glazing with thermally broken aluminium framing to deliver fire protection without compromising architectural design.

The BAL-FZ window system is designed to achieve a Fire Resistance Level (FRL) of –/30/–, subject to the applicable tested system and installation requirements. It incorporates Aluflam’s fire-resistant aluminium framing, specialised glazing and protective seals to support compliance with Australian bushfire construction requirements.

Under AS 3959, buildings located in BAL-FZ areas are subject to stringent construction requirements due to their potential exposure to direct flame contact and intense radiant heat. Depending on the applicable compliance pathway, window systems may require testing to AS 1530.8.2 or an appropriate fire resistance rating supported by AS 1530.4 testing.

Available with powder-coated or anodised aluminium finishes, Greene Fire’s BAL-FZ Fire Rated Windows provide an architectural glazing solution for residential and commercial developments in bushfire-prone areas across Australia. Final system selection, glazing specifications and installation details must be confirmed against the relevant test documentation and project requirements.

Fire Rating

The Aluflam BAL-FZ Fire Rated Window is designed for applications requiring bushfire protection under AS 3959.

The product documentation identifies a Fire Resistance Level (FRL) of –/30/–, providing 30 minutes of fire integrity for the specified system configuration.

Under AS 3959, BAL-FZ represents the highest Bushfire Attack Level classification, applicable to buildings potentially exposed to direct flame contact.

Depending on the project requirements, compliance may be demonstrated through an appropriate fire-rated window assembly or testing in accordance with AS 1530.8.2.

How Does The Glass Work?

The Aluflam BAL-FZ Fire Rated Window incorporates specialised fire-resistant glazing designed to provide protection against fire exposure in bushfire-prone environments.

Unlike conventional window glazing, fire-resistant glass is designed to maintain its required performance under specified fire test conditions. When combined with the appropriate aluminium framing, seals and installation system, it forms part of a complete fire-resistant window assembly.

Bushfire protection requirements

Buildings classified as BAL-FZ may be exposed to direct flame contact, intense radiant heat and burning embers. As a result, window systems must satisfy the applicable requirements of AS 3959.

Depending on the approved compliance pathway, this may involve:

  • A window system tested in accordance with AS 1530.8.2.

  • An appropriately fire-rated window system supported by AS 1530.4 testing.

The Aluflam BAL-FZ window documentation identifies an FRL of –/30/–, representing 30 minutes of fire integrity without a specified insulation rating.

The performance of the complete window depends on the approved glazing, framing, seals, fixing details and installation method. All components must be selected in accordance with the relevant test documentation.
